Nothing ruins the day like a bad hair day. Flat, oily and static are all words that make me cringe. Why can’t my hair look like I just had a blow out everyday? I have a great appreciation for older women who have their hair done weekly. I love big hair. Like, Dolly Parton big hair. If there’s a product out there that guarantees bigger, fuller hair I’m going to try it. I will be the first one to tell you I have not been the best at managing my hair care. I don’t trim my hair as often as I need to, and I use more heat on it than I should. I feel fortunate that I have fairly healthy hair, otherwise it might have all been gone by this point. For the most part I’m a pretty low maintenance girl, hair included. I don’t like visiting the salon every six weeks, and that’s just the facts. I started caring for my hair after I got my first big girl job. Hair care isn’t cheap, but just remember you get what you pay for. I’m not going to tell you that drugstore haircare will deliver the same results as the products you purchase from your salon because frankly they just won’t. That’s not to say I don’t use drugstore products because I do, but if we’re talking preference I think we both know which one wins the race. So, I want to share some of my favorite go-to hair products, both high end and drugstore that I have found give me the full voluminous hair we all love.
BEFORE YOU DRY
I never used to use products in my hair before I blow dried it, and let me just say…what was I thinking? I wanted endless volume, but I was skipping a very essential step. I notice a huge difference in the weight and texture of my hair depending on if I apply products before drying. My current routine includes Kendra Root Lifting Spray, Bb Thickening Spray, and L’OREAL Boost It Volume Inject Mousse. I start by applying Kendra Root Lifting Spray to my roots, next I will add Bb thickening spray through the ends, followed by a small amount of L’OREAL Boost It Volume Inject Mousse. I have naturally oily hair, so I use these products sparingly. I have noticed if I get heavy handed with any of these products my hair will get more oily much quicker.
DRYING
In the past twenty some years I have been doing my hair I have 1.) never learned how to properly use a round brush, and 2.) always dried my hair flipped over my head. Imagine being nine months pregnant and bending over to blow dry your hair. What can I say? Old habits die hard. Along with drying my hair flipped over my head, I also use a round brush to brush through as I dry. This cuts down on my drying time, reduces tangles and adds a little volume around my face.
STYLING
I choose a styling tool based on the look I’m going for that day. Typically, I wear my hair straight with a slight curl at the ends. I get this look with a two inch barrel curling iron. You can check out my tutorial on Instagram if you need a visual. After I’m finished with my styling tools I will apply Living Proof Full Dry Volume Blast. You guys, of all the products I use this one is possibly the best. This product gives my hair SO much volume I could be convinced it’s magic. I spray it upwards towards the root, shake it out, and my hair instantly goes from 0 to 100 on the volume meter. Depending on the feel of my hair I might add some dry shampoo at the root to create some more grit, then I’ll follow up with a dry texturizing spray. My all time favorite is Oribe dry texturizing spray, but if I’m out of my fav I’ll grab a drugstore brand until I can restock. I spray the texturizing spray in an upwards direction at the ends of my hair. This will give me some much needed dimension. If I’m needing some more lift I’ll apply Oribe Swept Up to the root. Just a couple pumps is all you will need of this product. It actually works best on day two hair, and I never go without this if I am sporting an updo for the day. I finish my everyday look with a light hair spray, because movement is essential for me. I don’t like a stiff look.
MORE AMAZING PRODUCTS YOU WILL LOVE.
Olaplex no 3 – You need this product. If you’re looking for something new to try, here it is. If you have damage or you just want to treat your hair, this is the product. I am someone who will not try new hair products especially hair masks and treatments out of fear they will add to my already oily scalp, but this product changed my hair game. It will leave your hair so soft and light you won’t believe it. It’s amazing.
Oribe Anything – I could blab all day long about how great every single Oribe product is, but I will save you all some time and just tell you that everything that I have tried from this brand has been absolutely amazing. They all do exactly what they say, and they smell great. I have a few linked on my collage, pick a few to try and I promise you wont regret it.
If you struggle with fine, flat hair give some of these products a try. My hair may look thick and full of volume, but don’t be fooled my hair is not naturally full and voluminous. I struggle with oily, soft hair that’s easily weighed down. I have been actively searching for products that will give me the results these have for years. I finally found some products I love, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I hope you all guy some a try and love them too!
