Newborn Essentials

If you’re pregnant you may be aware by now of the completely overwhelming baby market. There is quite possibly a baby product for e v e r y t h i n g. I get it though being a mom is hard, and we just want all the things that could make mommying a little easier on us. I’m not exaggerating when I say I would spend hours just reading reviews on baby products. I wanted to know I was making the right choices for my little one, and that I would be well prepared for her arrival. Anyways, if you’re expecting and you need a little direction with your baby registry I’m sharing mine down below along with what I highly recommend, as well as what I think you could do without. I have broken this post down into two sections because I felt it was necessary, and that’s just the way my mind works. So, you will find a newborn essentials list where I talk all about the travel, bath and baby gear I used, along with a newborn clothing essential list. If you are breastfeeding I will link my Breastfeeding Tips and Tricks post here where you can find all the products I recommend for breastfeeding mommas. So let’s get started!

Newborn Clothing Essentials

  • 5-7  Short Sleeve Onesies/Long Sleeve Onesies
  • 2-4 Gowns
  • 4-5 Footies
  • 2-3 Mitts
  • 3-4 Newborn Outfits
  • 7-10 Pairs of Socks
  • 1-2 Hats
  • 2-4 Receiving Blankets
  • 1-2 Swaddles
  • 7-10 Burp Cloths
  • 5-7 Bibs

If you don’t mind doing some laundry every day you may not need as many clothing items as I have listed here. I found it easiest to have enough to get through a few days, because I’m a “laundry every other day” type of girl. I also want to note that all babies are different, so some of the things I have listed here may not be a necessity for you. These are all things that I personally used with my baby.

  • Short / Long Sleeve Onesies – My daughter was born in December, so it was quite chilly here in Kentucky and undershirts were a must for us.
  • Gowns / Footies – Depending on which you prefer you may need a few more gowns than footies or vice vera. Although I have a few snap footie favorites, I think a lot of mothers will agree gowns and zip footies are much more convenient during those nighttime wakings.
  • Mitts – Mia always, always, always keeps here hands on her face, so mitts were our best friend to keep her scratch free. I only purchased a four pack of mitts and that was more than enough. You may find that a lot of footies and gowns will have a flap on the sleeve you can fold down over their hands in place of mitts as well.
  • Newborn Outfits –  I purchased newborn outfits for doctors visits, if we were planning a day out, or expecting visitors. Mia was 7lbs 13oz and 21 inches long,  and she was in NB sizes for nearly two months. I was told not to purchase a lot of NB sized outfits because babies typically don’t stay in that size very long, just a heads up they don’t stay in any size very long, but personally I’m glad I bought some newborn sizes because 0-3 months was huge on her.
  • Socks –  One pack of socks is more than enough for the newborn stage.
  • Hair bows / Hats – Mia had hair so I grabbed hair bows over hats, but looking back on pictures of her now I absolutely adore her in hats. Baby #2 will have more hats.
  • Receiving Blankets – Like I mentioned earlier, Mia was born in December so we bundled her up most of the time. I purchased 4 flannel receiving blankets, and not only did I love them she loved them too. The only negative was they weren’t quite big enough to swaddle her in.
  • Swaddles – If you’re not a swaddle pro just get the velcro swaddles. They’re amazing. Well, unless the sound of velcro scares your child. Mia had a few upsets because she wasn’t a fan of the sound. My amazing sis in law also gifted me a personalized swaddle from Caden Lane that was hands down my favorite blanket swaddle. Not only was it adorable, but it was so soft and more than big enough to swaddle Mia in.
  • Burp Cloths / Bibs –  Of all the things you need do not forget burp cloths and bibs. You will use them, trust me. I had a burp cloth within arms reach of me from the time Mia was born. She spit up on me WAY more times than I could count and a burp cloth and bib saved her outfit and mine on the reg.

Newborn Gear Essentials

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Bottles
  • Bottle Cleaning Essentials
  • Diaper Bag
  • Changing Pad
  • Pacifier
  • Pacifier Clip
  • Gripe Water
  • Gas Drop
  • Butt Paste
  • Owlet Monitor
  • Bassinet
  • Travel System
  • Carseat Cover
  • Bouncer
  • Swing
  • Baby Monitor
  • Sound Machine
  • Nasal Aspirator
  • Nail Clippers
  • Thermometer
  • Diaper Caddy
  • Hangers
  • Bathtub
  • Both Towel
  • Washcloths
  • Shampoo/Lotion
  • Dreft

  • Changing Pad – I used a changing pad most of the time when changing Mia, because I never knew when she was going to surprise me. I’ve been peed on a number of times and was able to save my furniture and sheets because I had her on a changing pad.
  • Pacifier – I was one of those moms that didn’t want to give her baby a pacifier in fear of “nipple confusion.” I made it to day three. We were on our third visit back to the hospital due to jaundice, and we had been sitting in the parking lot for, um, about thirty minutes with a screaming baby when I decided to take a chance on “nipple confusion” and spare my nerves. Mia and I had no problem at all with a pacifier. She’s a huge fan, and I am too.
  • Diaper Bag with Changing Pad – I am currently carrying Happ Brand Levy Backpack in Black. I chose not to feature this item, because my mom insists it is the worst diaper bag ever because of the inconvenient zipper placement that makes it hard to open. So, another good option is the Land I have linked on my registry. It’s affordable, has a wide opening, and easy to access bottle compartment. It is also completely waterproof which is nice.
  • Pacifier Clips – I love silicone pacifier clips as opposed to cloth or woven. They can be cleaned easily, serve as a teething toy when your baby gets a little older, and they don’t harbor odors like woven and cloth. If you opt for woven pacifier clips and you happen to smell something that resembles dirty socks every time you’re near your baby, check the clip.
  • Owlet Monitor – One of my most recommended baby products. Anytime a new mom asks me what I would recommend this is the product I tell them about. Let me just say before I had my daughter my thoughts on this item was that it is a luxury item, and not a necessity. I will say yes it is not something you HAVE to have like say a carseat, BUT you need it. The peace of mind this product gives you is worth skimping on the stroller, the swing, and the diaper bag. Trust me, I would buy this ten times over if given the choice again.
  • Gripe Water / Gas Drops / Butt Paste – Buy them. Stock them. Use them.
  • Bassinet – I loved the bassinet linked on my registry, and Mia loved it too. It is pricey, but well worth it. I used this for the first five months with Mia. It’s mobile, and since newborns nap so often I just rolled the bassinet to whatever room I was in at the moment and she slept while I cleaned. Not to mention I love the look of it as well.
  • Bouncer – The bouncer I registered for is pricey. I love the look, and Mia will sit in it, but I definitely think it’s over priced. I highly recommend having a bouncer, just maybe not this one.
  • Carseat Cover – Great for winter babies. It was also great for keeping Mia covered up when we had doctors appointments to help prevent the spread of germs since it was flu season.
  • Travel System – Choose a travel system. I did not purchase the bassinet with my travel system because I actually purchased each piece separately, and I didn’t feel like I had a need for the bassinet since Mia would be too big for it by the time we were able to use the stroller. Again, winter baby. I went with this carseat and stroller combo because of the ease of use, the unique safety features of the carseat, as well as the ability to convert the stroller into a double in the future. I’ll also add that since the COVID outbreak I have been using this stroller anytime I need to go anywhere, because the rain shield works as a “mask” for a seven month old. I know this particular set is pricey, but there are some similar budget friendly travel system options as well.
  • Swing – Highly recommend the Fisher-Price Cradle ‘n Swing in Safari Dreams. This swing has truly been a dream. Mia loves it, and it calms her down when she’s fussy. We actually have a Mamaroo as well, and she’s just not a fan. Again, all babies are completely different, but I would recommend Fisher-Price Cradle ‘n Swing over the Mamaroo.
  • Diaper Caddy – Not a necessity, but extremely convenient. I had my diaper caddy stocked with everything I normally needed to take care of Mia (diapers, wipes, gripe water, burp cloths, etc), and I carried it from room to room. I didn’t need to stock diapers and wipes all over my house, and I wasn’t constantly running from room to room every time she needed a diaper change.
  • Bottles – Every baby is different. I found Mia prefers Dr. Brown’s over the other bottles I have tried, but she will take MAM’s too. My advice is grab a variety pack of bottles and try a couple to see which one your baby prefers best.
  • Bottle cleaning Essentials – You can’t clean a bottle good with just a rag, trust me.
  • Sound Machine – Possibly my second most recommended item. Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine Night Light & Time-to-Rise is the only way I can get my daughter to sleep soundly. She is such a light sleeper and this helps so much!
  • Nasal Aspirator – Fridababy NoseFrida Snotsucker Nasal Aspirator. I know it looks and sounds gross, but this is the very best nasal aspirator on the market. Those bulb things are pretty much the flip phones of nasal aspirators.
  • Nail Clippers – As I mentioned earlier Mia constantly has her hands on her face, and I have to keep her nails trimmed on the reg. The SnipperClipper by NailFrida has been a dream. I haven’t had any accidents while clipping her nails due to the mechanisms of the clippers. Highly recommend.
  • Monitor – I didn’t feel like I need a fancy baby monitor because I knew I would normally be near Mia while she was asleep, and I had her owlet on her while she napped if she wasn’t right next to me. I love the vtech monitors, the sound is great and they’re really affordable.
  • Thermometer – Two month shots come quickly and odds are your baby might spike a fever, so stock your medicine cabinet with a good thermometer and some infant Tylenol.
  •  Baby Towel / Washcloths – I love a good baby towel and wash cloth. I think the wash cloths are softer and easier to use, and I think hooded towels are just adorable.
  • Shampoo / Lotion – Let me just say you do not need five bottles of shampoo and lotion. It’s not recommended to bathe your baby daily, so one large body wash and lotion should be more than enough to get you through your newborn stage. Honestly, Mia is seven months old and I’m still using the same lotion and body wash I was when she was born.
  • Dreft – Some moms skip this. Whatever you choose is completely up to you. I personally love the way it makes Mia’s clothes smell, and it protects her skin.
  • Hangers – Baby sized hangers for baby sized clothes, and that’s that.
  • Baby Bathtub – Babies are slippery when wet.

A few things that were on my registry that didn’t get the love I thought they would.

  • Wipe Warmer – I used this for the first couple weeks, because my daughter HATED cold wipes. She would scream bloody murder, and diaper changes were dreadful. Our wipe warmer made them somewhat more bearable, but once we got past the cold wipes this was nothing more than a dust collector. I will say if this had been, I don’t know battery operated or something that allowed the wipe warmer to be portable without having to be plugged I might would have used it more, but it had to be plugged in at all times to actually keep the wipes warm. Just not a huge fan.
  • Bottle Sterilizer – I won’t say this didn’t get the love, because let me tell ya, it did. I used this daily. It’s so much easier than constantly having a boiling pot of water on the stove, looks better, and doesn’t take as long. I just don’t know that I would consider it essential, because it’s not. Will make your life much easier though.
  • Moby Wrap – Another thing I love, but just don’t use that much. I think I’ve used my wrap twice. Maybe if we weren’t experiencing a global pandemic I would use it more often, but we just don’t get out enough to use it like I thought we would.

Hope this helps all you momma’s to be. You can check out what was on my baby registry here. Again, these are only the things I registered for in regards to the newborn stage. I will be posting again soon with my 3-9 month recommendations. Leave me a comment with your most recommended baby product below. Until next time.
